Edoardo Rubino
Il risveglio

The work was exhibited in 1938 at the exhibition at Palazzo Bianco in Genoa dedicated to the collections of the Frugone brothers. In the same year it was given on loan to the 10th Fascist Exhibition of Fine Arts in Turin. By now far removed from Art Nouveau and the Bistolfi influence that had characterised his work at the turn of the century, Rubino takes up a subject typical of international Symbolist sculpture, particularly of Rodin, and translates it into this powerful sculpture of a compact, well-formed nude. Signed and dated 1934, the sculpture was held in Room 3 of the Modern Art Gallery before being transferred to Villa Grimaldi, the home of the Frugone Collections since 21 March 1993. The preparatory chalk mould was left in the artist's inheritance in 1955 and is kept in the Modern Art Gallery in Turin.
